The Village of Pinehurst and Pinehurst Police Department are launching Silver Shield, a new community initiative designed to help residents recognize scams, report suspicious activity, and connect with help when something doesn’t seem right.
The initiative will officially launch during a free Cybercrime Prevention Community Event on Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 2-4 p.m. at Pinehurst Assembly Hall, 395 Magnolia Road. The event is being held in partnership with the Village’s Senior Advisory Committee.
As part of Silver Shield, the Pinehurst Police Department is also launching a confidential helpline at 910-420-1654, monitored by Pinehurst detectives. Residents can call the line if they believe they may have been the victim of a scam or fraud, want to report suspicious activity, or simply encounter something that doesn’t seem right and aren’t sure what to do next.
The help line is intended to give residents a direct connection to local law enforcement for guidance, support, and referrals when appropriate.
Cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to reach potential victims through phone calls, text messages, email, social media and other online platforms. The Sept. 29 event will help residents recognize those threats and provide straightforward steps they can take to protect themselves and their families.
Members of the Pinehurst Police Department will discuss common scams and online threats, ways to safeguard personal and financial information, tips for using technology safely and confidently, and what to do when fraud or suspicious activity is suspected.
While Silver Shield places a particular emphasis on protecting older adults, the program and event are available to the entire Pinehurst community, including family members and caregivers who want to help protect someone they love.
Attendees are encouraged to bring questions and learn directly from Pinehurst Police officers about scams they are seeing in the community and how residents can avoid becoming victims.
The Silver Shield: Cybercrime Prevention Community Event is free and does not require registration. It will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 2-4 p.m. at Pinehurst Assembly Hall, 395 Magnolia Road.
