The Hoke County Animal Shelter is looking for adoptees and rescues after reportedly taking in 30 puppies in the span of one week—including a litter that was smuggled into the shelter beneath a woman’s coat.
“We are drowning. In just one week, we have taken in over 30 puppies,” writes the shelter. “This week alone, someone smuggled puppies under her jacket, placed them in a small kennel, and took off. While we appreciate they were brought to a shelter, this is still unacceptable.”
In addition to the number of puppies that were dropped off and surrendered, the shelter also took in a mother dog in active labor, who went on to deliver a litter of 10 puppies.
Shelter staff says they are looking for adopters, rescue groups, fosters, and “anyone who can help in any way.” Alongside the puppies, the shelter is currently full with adult dogs and cats patiently waiting for their forever homes.
“We need the public to spay and neuter!” encourages shelter staff. “The number of phone calls we are receiving for pregnant dogs and puppies is unprecedented. They did not ask to be born. They did not ask to be here. They deserve safety, warmth, and a chance at a real life.”
