Thagard Dam creates and protects Thagard Lake, the largest lake in Whispering Pines. As a vital part of the Village infrastructure, it supports recreation, environmental resources, community character, property values, and downstream public safety, the Village announced.
“The existing dam, built in sections between 1900 and 1964, is showing signs of age, including seepage, cracking, and concrete deterioration,” said the Village in a news release. “Engineering studies have determined that replacement is the safest and most cost-effective long-term solution.”
The Village said current plans include construction of a new labyrinth-style spillway, with construction potentially beginning as early as 2028. The project is expected to cost more than $20 million and will require the lake to be temporarily drained during construction.
“This investment will help ensure the safety and future of Thagard Lake for generations to come,” said the Village. “Labyrinth spillways are commonly installed to increase weir length and the associated discharge capacity.”
