Though temperatures linger in the seventies and eighties, the arrival of September signals that autumn is near. The gardens at Sandhills Community College are preparing to celebrate the season with their inaugural Scarecrow Stroll.
The Legacy of the Scarecrow
Historically, scarecrows have been used as decoys to protect crops from birds and wildlife. Their origins trace back to ancient times, mimicking humans’ figures. The term “scarecrow” dates back to the 1550s. This agricultural practice, dating back to ancient times, remains relevant today in both traditional and modern forms. Over time, scarecrows have become not only practical tools but also beloved cultural symbols, featured in decorations and literature such as The Wizard of Oz.
About the Exhibition
The Sandhills Scarecrow Stroll will display 10 scarecrows in various locations within the horticultural gardens. Each display, constructed from a wooden frame and stuffed with bales of hay, will be designed and decorated according to a unique theme by participating community members. Eight garden clubs will contribute, including two from Whispering Pines, three from Seven Lakes, The Botanical Garden Club, Pinehurst Garden Club, and Linden Garden Club. The SHG Staff and SCC Landscape Gardening Students and Faculty will create two additional scarecrows.
Unique Themes
Each scarecrow will present a distinct theme, ranging from whimsical figures to designs inspired by autumn, ensuring visitors experience something fresh and memorable with every stroll.
Exhibition Dates and Voting Oct. 1 – 31
The exhibition opens with a private reception on October 1 and runs through October 31. Visitors can view the scarecrow displays during normal garden hours, which extend from dawn to dusk, seven days a week. Voting will be available in three categories: “Best Dressed,” “Most Playful,” and “Most Unique.” To cast a vote, visitors will note the name of their favorite scarecrow and scan the QR code on the pamphlet provided at the Ball Visitor Center. Voting links will also be available on social media and the Gardens website. Winners in each category will receive recognition from the event.
Seasonal Enjoyment
This festive fall event will encourage a connection with nature as visitors explore the creative displays and enjoy the changing beauty of the gardens throughout the fall season. It promises to be a garden stroll filled with curiosity and enjoyment for the whole family.
The gardens are located at Ball Garden Visitors’ Center, 3245 Airport Rd., Pinehurst. More information about the gardens can be found at https://www.sandhills.edu/horticultural-gardens/upcoming-events.html
