Tragedy struck for a former Moore County firefighter who lost his home in a fire Tuesday night. The fire occurred around 9 p.m. on March 31 in the Ashley Heights community just across the Hoke County line.
The fire occurred at the home of Travis McGougan, who spent two decades working in fire and emergency services in Moore County.
“I’ve spent all my years in emergency services on the other side,” McGougan said. “For it to happen to me is a different experience. I finally got a place I could call home, and we were devastated by fire.”
McGougan said the fire started when a pot on the stove sparked a grease fire, and the flames quickly spread through the home.
Everyone inside escaped safely, including McGougan’s two daughters, ages 15 and 9, and the family’s two dogs. However, the fire destroyed the house and most of the family’s belongings.
“I’m having to start all over,” he explained in an interview with Sandhills Sentinel.
McGougan also shared a small piece of hope: a piece of artwork created by his daughter was saved.
“I was able to salvage my daughter’s canvas she created,” he said, “giving us all some reassurance during this time.”

The family is currently staying with McGougan’s mother while they determine their next steps. McGougan said rebuilding will be difficult because the home was not insured.
A GoFundMe campaign created to assist the family states that donations will help cover temporary housing, replace essential belongings, and manage daily expenses as they recover from the loss.
The fundraiser describes McGougan as a dedicated father and longtime public servant who spent years helping others during emergencies.
“Travis is an incredible father, friend, and pillar of our community,” reads the fundraiser. “For over 20 years, he dedicated his life to serving others in fire and emergency services as a firefighter and EMS provider. A Moore County native, Travis has always gone above and beyond to help those in need without hesitation. Now, it’s our turn to come together and support him and his family!”
