For two years, one Southern Pines Police Officer has sniffed out crime and is now retiring.  K-9 Mary retired on Oct. 31 after two years of barking and wagging her tail, announced the department on their Facebook page.

Having a nose for the job, Mary has assisted with catching criminals and making arrests even winning Employee of the Quarter last year with her human handler, Officer Kevin Dean.

“Mary was driven to work and had an outstanding career during the two years she worked the road,” stated Sergeant Embler who heads up the K9 unit. “From locating narcotics to persons, Mary proved to be an asset for the Southern Pines Police Department, the Town of Southern Pines, and the citizens of Moore County.”

K9 Mary’s law enforcement career ended due to medical reasons and will live out her retired years with Officer Dean who adopted her.
