Lee County car chase ends in Carthage

A man led deputies on a two-county car chase and is now facing several charges, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

“On January 3rd, 2024, Lee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Agents attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Willett Road near Greenwood Road,” said the Lee County Sheriff’s Office on its Facebook page. “The vehicle fled and led deputies on a high-speed chase through Lee and Moore County. The vehicle’s driver, Scott Murray Burnett (48), eventually pulled into the parking lot of Pete’s Restaurant in Carthage and attempted to flee on foot. Burnett was captured after a brief foot chase behind the establishment.”

Burnett was arrested on charges of felony flee to elude to arrest with motor vehicle, reckless driving, speeding, failure to maintain lane control, fail to stop at stop sign, and expired operator’s license. Burnett also received traffic-related charges from Moore County.

Burnett had several outstanding warrants for arrest for alleged breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, felony flee to elude arrest with motor vehicle, drive left of center, open container after consuming alcohol, fail to stop at stop sign, and reckless driving out of Forsyth County, as well as warrants for arrest out of Guilford County for charges felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, obtain property by false pretense.

Burnett was brought before a Lee County magistrate, placed in the Lee County Jail without bond, and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
