Moore units called to Sanford for water rescues

Moore County first responders were sent to Lee County to assist with rescues during flash floods on Thursday.

The City of Sanford announced on its social media page that multiple water rescues were performed in downtown Sanford due to flooding of Little Buffalo Creek.

“The Moore County Water Rescue Task Force, comprised of personnel from Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue, was deployed on Thursday to Lee County and the City of Sanford in response to a Swift Water Emergency caused by heavy rainfall resulting in Flash Flooding,” said Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue on its social media page. “CPFR provided assistance in evacuating individuals trapped in high water within vehicles and buildings. All occupants were safely removed, and the water has begun to recede.”

Members of the Vass Police Department were also called into action for the water-related emergency. “We’re proud to support our neighboring counties when called upon,” said the Vass Police Department on its Facebook page. “Teamwork and quick response save lives.”

Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue reminds the public that during flash floods or swift water events, it is essential to seek higher ground and avoid attempting to drive, swim, or walk through swift water.”

Sanford officials said there were also downed trees and power lines during the storm.

The water receded within the banks of the creek later in the day.
