Fahy William McDonald (Twig), age 80 of Whispering Pines passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospice House in Pinehurst with his family by his side.
Twig was born on August 5, 1938 in Grampian, PA to the late Fahy C. McDonald and Frances Thorp McDonald. He was a veteran of his country and served in the United States Navy. Twig graduated from Penn State with a Bachelors Degree in Forestry in 1960, he then worked from 1960-1964 as a forester in Eastern, Kentucky. From 1965-1969, he operated Thomas Brothers Coal Company in Pennsylvania and in 1970, he started his own coal company, McDonald Land & Mining Inc. Then in 1977 he purchased Thomas Brothers Coal Co. and operated both operations until 1996 when he retired. He was a member of the Southern Pines VFW Post # 7318 and a former member of the American Legion Post # 505 in Curwensville, PA. Twig enjoyed woodworking, playing golf and music. He had his own bluegrass band, The Barbed-Wire Choir for many years.
Twig is survived by his wife of 23 years, Stella Redmond McDonald of Whispering Pines; his children: Michael McDonald and wife Brenda of Curwensville, PA; Cindy Bloom of Curwensville, PA; two grandchildren: Travis McDonald and wife Jessica of Bellfonte, PA and Brandon McDonald of Curwensville, PA and a great-grandchild, Mia McDonald and a step-grandson, Trinity Brown of Texas; three stepchildren: Victor Brown of Florida; Jack Dare Brown Jr. of Wilmington, NC and Pamela Brown of Carthage, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Cathy McDonald and Mark McDonald; a stepson, Clifford Brown; a sister, Jeanine Thomas; and a grandson, Sean McDonald.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home Chapel in Southern Pines. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
