A body was recovered in Wagram following a nearly 24-hour search effort. The recovery came after a person disappeared in the water the day before, while in the Lumber River just over the Scotland County line. It’s unclear why the person was in the water.
The reported drowning occurred shortly after noon on Thursday, and search efforts involving divers and boats continued around the clock. To assist in the rescue/retrieval process, units from Moore, Hoke, and Scotland counties responded to the scene, including an air truck brought in from Seven Lakes.
On Friday morning, emergency crews located a body near a low bridge off North Turnpike Road in Wagram around 11:40 a.m., according to radio traffic. A medical examiner was requested to the scene shortly afterward to confirm the victim’s identity.
Authorities blocked off and rerouted traffic on North Turnpike Road in both directions while crews worked the scene.
No further details regarding the cause or the victim’s identity have been released.Â
