Janet Austin Bentley, 90, passed away Friday, October 26, 2018 at Quail Haven, in Pinehurst. A private family memorial will be held in the Florida Keys in December.

Mrs. Bentley and her twin sister Jeaane Reis (deceased),were born in Waltham, Massachusetts on May 18, 1928 to the late Vivian Morse and Howard Austin. Janet graduated from Belmont High School in Belmont. Mass. She went on to receive a Bachelors of Science in Business from Simmons College in 1950. That same year she married Colin Bentley.

Mr. and Mrs. Bentley spent most of their married life on Long Island, and later in Westchester, NY. After retiring from her position as a field adviser for the Girl Scouts and upon Mr. Bentley’s retirement as a high school principal in Westchester, they relocated to Pinehurst, NC in 1977. Pinehurst was their heaven on earth and they spent many happy days working and playing in their beloved Sandhills.

Education was very important to both and that passion led Janet to become the founding president of the College Club as well as acting as the Secretary for the Simmons 50th reunion for her class. She volunteered for many causes, most recently volunteering at the Given Library. She had a long and very active social life with her bridge club members and the ‘pool ladies’. Her beautiful smile and dedication to her community, her friends and her family will be sorely missed.

Mrs. Bentley is survived by her daughter, Lynne Bentley-Kemp, Lynne’s husband, Weston Kemp and her son Bruce MacLean Bentley. Her husband Colin and her youngest son Phillip Hilton Bentley pre-deceased her. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to a charity of one’s choice.
