Joseph (Joe) Arthur Kapp Pinehurst, North Carolina passed away on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at First Health after battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis for the past year.

Joe was born in 1938 in Port Chester, New York. He was the only child of Bella Louise Houle Kapp and Joseph Alfred Kapp. Growing up in the Cos Cob section of Greenwich, Connecticut, he graduated from Greenwich High School in 1956. Joe proudly served in the United States Army at Fort Eustis, Virginia and was honorably discharged from active duty in 1968. After the U.S. Army, he attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia graduating with a degree in Data Processing. After college, he went to work as a banker at Union Trust Company in Greenwich, retiring as an Executive Vice President in 1987.
In 1981, Joe met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Bette) Ruth McCrady at a chance meeting in the cafeteria eating yogurts at Union Trust Company. They were married in April 1982 while skiing at Lake Tahoe, California. For 38 years, Joe and Bette lived in Connecticut, South Carolina, New Hampshire and North Carolina, golfing the many fine courses, skiing the slopes of the Northeast and enjoying the coastal areas of Maine and Charleston, South Carolina. 

Joe was an avid golfer starting his love of golf in Greenwich, CT at Wee Burn Country Club. Semi-retired, Joe spent seven years as the owner and President of the Golf Shack in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Since 1998, he has been a member of the USGA Champion Club playing in many champion golf tournaments throughout the East Coast. He also was a past member of the Golf Collector’s Memorabilia Society and other golf collector’s groups. Joe has been a member of Whitney Farms Country Club, Wild Dunes Country Club and Resort, Pinehurst Country Club, Laconia Country Club and most recently a member of Longleaf Golf and Family Club in Southern Pines, NC.

Joe is survived by his best friend and wife Bette and their children, Sharon Louise Kapp Stimson, her husband Scott, Laura Beth McCrady Cote, her devoted boyfriend, John Peters and Gregory David McCrady, his wife Valerie. He will be sadly missed by his seven wonderful grandchildren, Tyler, Tanner, Noah, Drew, Tanner, Ashley and Christian.

A Memorial Reception will be held at Joe’s home in Pinehurst on Sunday, September 23rd between 12:30 – 4pm.
