Officer Terry Wells with the Southern Pines Police Department has recieved the “Employee of the Quarter Award” for the first quarter of 2018.

This award recognizes police department employees who have provided exemplary service to the community, or performed in a manner worthy of recognition. The Southern Pines Police Department announced in a press release that this award is the result of a peer nomination and action by the supervisory and leadership team of the Southern Pines Police Department.

Officer Terry Wells is the recipient of this award for the first quarter of 2018. Officer Wells was selected due to his diligence, tenacity, professionalism and self-motivation investigating felony incidents, which occurred during the first quarter of 2018, according to Chief Temme. In addition, Officer Wells is being recognized for his proactive approach to crime prevention.

During the first quarter of 2018, Officer Wells was recognized for the following incidents:

1. Officer Wells conducted a larceny investigation involving a local business. Officer Wells’ rapid response and immediate investigation identified a suspect, and subsequently resulted in locating this wanted suspect for the initial larceny complaint. A follow up investigation was conducted at this scene, which resulted in discovering the suspect who was in custody had committed other crimes as well. Additional charges for the suspect were brought and several hundred dollars of stolen property was recovered.

2. While conducting a directed patrol following several larceny incidents that occurred, Officer Wells observed a suspicious male on a bicycle. Upon approaching this suspicious male and attempting to identify him, this male fled on foot. Officer Wells gave chase, and this male was taken into custody. An investigation conducted by Officer Wells determined that the male now in custody had just stolen the bicycle he was riding. There is a high probability that Officer Wells’ actions prevented further crimes from occurring.

3. While conducting a self-initiated special attention check, Officer Wells observed a large crowd that had gathered. Upon further investigation, a male armed with a firearm fled on foot. Officer Wells gave chase on foot and apprehended this armed individual. At the time of the arrest, Officer Wells recovered a loaded .380 caliber semiautomatic pistol from the suspect. Officer Wells’ actions demonstrated true courage and selflessness in protecting our community.

Chief Temme offered the following comments on Officer Wells’ achievement:

“The Southern Pines Police Department is proud to recognize Officer Terry Wells with this award. In addition to the noteworthy actions/incidents listed above, Officer Wells excelled in conducting self-initiated patrol activities that have resulted in preventing crime and improving community relations with those we all are proud to serve and protect.”
