teen airlifted after being shot at Carthage home

A teenager was airlifted to a hospital after being shot at a home near Carthage. The shooting occurred at a home in the 300 block of Sandy Oak Road just before 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Crews with EMS and the fire department staged away from the scene until it was safe to enter. Deputies provided medical aid to the teenager until EMS took over.

A makeshift landing zone was created at Sandy Ramey Keith Park on U.S. 1 Business in Vass for a medevac from Scotland County to fly the patient to a hospital.

According to radio communications, the teen was allegedly shot in the stomach by his brother.

Major Eric Galloway with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office told Sandhills Sentinel it appears to be an accidental shooting at this point in the investigation, and no other information was released due to the ages of the people involved.

“Safety reminder, these incidents serve as a critical reminder to always practice safe firearm handling,” said the Cypress Pointe Fire Department on its social media page after responding to the shooting. “Firearms should be securely stored, never left unattended, and handled responsibly at all times.”
