One injured when car slams into power pole on icy road

A single-vehicle accident on an icy side street sent a driver to the hospital Sunday. The accident occurred in the 100 block of N. Hardin Street in Southern Pines around 2 p.m.

The driver of Ford Escape was traveling on Hardin Street toward Pennsylvania Avenue when he lost control of the car and slammed into a power pole. The impact broke the power pole, and the vehicle continued to skid and stopped beside a tree at the intersection with Pennsylvania Avenue.

The driver was entrapped in the vehicle, and rescue crews had to work to get the door open and reach the injured driver. The man was transported to Firsthealth Moore Regional. His condition is unknown at this time. The roadway was noted to be icy in the area near the impact.

The 100 block of N. Hardin Street was barricaded after the accident due to a broken power pole. Duke Progress was en route to make repairs.

Southern Pines Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS and Southern Pines Police Department.
