O’Neal’s Max Epstein named National Merit Scholar

O’Neal senior Max Epstein was recognized as a National Merit Scholar for the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program before his peers recently. Max is one of 7,250 designees chosen from 15,000 finalists. These students were among the top scorers of more than 3.6 million high school seniors nationwide who entered the 2023 competition as juniors by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“This recognition is the result of Max’s endless pursuit of learning and discovery. His academic and artistic interests and talents make Max an outstanding student and scholar,” remarks Head of School John Elmore. “We look forward to what his bright future has in store.”

Max has been a student at O’Neal since prekindergarten 3. In his senior year, he is completing his intensive study as part of O’Neal’s select Signature Scholars Research Program. Max is also a Science Olympiad team member, a Model United Nations board member, and a founding member of O’Neal’s new Makerspace.

As a National Merit Scholar, Max will receive a scholarship from one of three sources: a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship, a corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship, or a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship.
