Pinecrest PTSA scholarship winners

The Pinecrest High School Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA) announced its scholarship winners for the 2019-2020 school year. Chosen for excellence in academics, athletics, arts, community service and character, seniors Audrey Ledford, Anna Grace Black, Grace VonCannon and Grant Oldham received scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000.

Audrey Ledford was a member of Pinecrest’s Student Government Association, Speech and Debate Team, Amnesty International Club and National Honor Society. She was enrolled in the North Carolina School of School of Science and Math online and participated in the United States Youth Ambassadors exchange to the Dominican Republic.

Ledford’s honors include honor junior marshal, AP Scholar with Distinction, national qualifier in the Catholic Forensic League and Lyceum Scholar. In 2019 she was chosen to interview retired public radio talk show host Diane Rehm during the Ruth Pauley Lecture Series. Ledford will attend Georgetown University with the goal of being a foreign service officer.

Anna Grace Black played on the Pinecrest volleyball and tennis teams, advancing to the state tennis playoffs in doubles her junior year and earning the title of conference champion her senior year. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Key Club.

As a team organizer and fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation – Walk to Cure, she was recognized for outstanding fundraising efforts from 2015 through 2019 and earned the Creative Design Award for her team t-shirt designs. She also volunteered at the Food Bank and served as a Brownson Presbyterian Youth Elder. Black will attend the College of Charleston with the goal of being a diabetes educator.

Grace VonCannon was a four-year member of the cross country and track and field teams, serving as co-captain during her junior and senior years. Her efforts earned her the Pinecrest Varsity Athletic Award, Pinecrest Varsity Statistician Award, Sandhills Athletic Conference Honors and North Carolina High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Award.

She was a Rotary International Youth Exchange Ambassador and member of Interact Service Club, National Honor Society and Student Government Association. VonCannon also volunteers at Pinehurst United Methodist Church and Moore Humane Society. She will attend Appalachian State University and major in psychology. 

Grant Oldham is an Eagle Scout with Troop 98 in West End. He was Pinecrest Marching Band’s drum major for three years and earned the title of Outstanding Drum Major.

A winner of the Fred J. Miller Outstanding Achievement Award, he also participated in the MPA Band – Wind Ensemble as well as Pinecrest’s Robotics Club, Pep Band and theater program. Oldham will attend Appalachian State University and major in history education.
