MCS recognizes January 'Engage. Inspire. Succeed.' honorees

The Moore County Board of Education recognized a new group of “Engage. Inspire. Succeed.” honorees for January, celebrating certified staff, support staff, students, and school programs for their contributions across the district.

The board honored Aberdeen Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Iolanda Perez-Santalla for her strong instructional practice and commitment to professional growth. School leaders noted that her planning, delivery, and positive approach create a structured and engaging classroom environment.

Aberdeen Elementary instructional assistant Stephanie Martin-Singley was recognized for her work with kindergarten students. She supports instruction, responds to classroom needs, and helps maintain a productive learning environment through her steady presence and willingness to assist wherever needed.

At Connect Academy, school counselor Kristin Garner earned recognition for guiding students in grades K–12 across the Blend+Ed and Virtual programs. She manages academic planning, student check-ins, classroom lessons, and graduation support while working across multiple locations.

Connect Academy data manager Shannon Fox was honored for taking on a wide range of responsibilities, including enrollment, family communication, bookkeeping, and Parent Portal support. Staff members credited her quick learning and efficiency with strengthening daily operations.

Southern Middle School physical education teacher Shellie “Coach” Swinnie was recognized for her leadership inside and outside the classroom. She supports PBIS initiatives, coordinates schoolwide activities, and leads a sixth-grade reading group during “Dragon Time.”

Southern Middle cafeteria team member Brittany Barber was celebrated for the warmth and encouragement she brings to the lunchroom each day. Staff described her as a steady source of positivity for students and colleagues.

Connect Academy senior Heba Ibrahim was recognized as the student honoree. Ibrahim holds a 4.38 GPA, has completed honors and dual-enrollment coursework, and is working toward an Associate of Science degree at Sandhills Community College. She participates in a wide range of interests, including reading, writing, art, baking, fitness, and bass guitar.

UP Stage Theatre Earns Statewide Honors

Union Pines High School’s UP Stage Theatre earned the Distinguished Play Award by Judges’ Choice at the North Carolina Theatre Conference State High School Play Festival for its production of Of Widows and Vegetables. The win qualifies the program to represent North Carolina at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in March. Director Chase Coston and the student cast were praised for their creativity and teamwork.

NCASBO Treasurer’s Academy Graduates

The board also recognized six staff members who completed the North Carolina Association of School Business Officials Treasurer’s Academy Certification:

The program covers school finance law, internal controls, accounting concepts, and other areas essential to school business operations. District leaders said the graduates’ training will strengthen financial procedures across Moore County Schools.
