A motorcyclist was transported via EMS to the hospital after a car struck him on his Harley Davidson motorcycle on Saturday evening. The crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at the intersection of Niagara Carthage Road and Camp Easter Road on the outskirts of Southern Pines; an intersection nearby residents referred to as “treacherous.”
According to N.C. State Highway Patrol, the motorcycle rider was struck so hard that he was ejected from his motorcycle when the driver of a Toyota RAV4 failed to stop at a stop sign.
As a result, the rider was rendered unconscious by the impact. Initially, air care was requested when first responders arrived on the scene but was determined unable to fly due to the weather. Instead, the rider was transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Toyota was the only occupant of the vehicle and declined treatment by EMS.
State Highway Patrol arrived to conduct an official investigation of the crash. First responders worked quickly to direct traffic and clean the wreckage that littered the roadway before the oncoming storm.
A nearby resident recounted the amount and severity of wrecks at this particular intersection over the years. With EMS training, he has often been on-scene to assist in removing trapped drivers from their vehicles and only hopes that the situation is improved in the future.
