Firefighters save house from kitchen fire in Vass

A quick response and swift knockdown of a fire saved a house from extensive damage in Vass on Sunday. The fire broke out in the kitchen of a home in the 100 block of Union Church Road just before 12 p.m.

An on-duty Vass police officer was conducting a traffic stop near the structure fire when he was notified by dispatch that the fire department was responding. He then noticed smoke coming from the home and immediately confirmed to dispatch that there was an active fire.

When the first fire engine arrived, crews quickly knocked down the flames, successfully containing the fire to the kitchen.

According to officials on scene, a pot on the stove caught fire, and the flames reached the cabinets before being brought under control.

One resident and a small dog were home at the time but were not injured in the fire.

First responders remained on the scene for a short time to for any extension of the fire and to ventilate smoke from the home using fans.

Union Church Road was brought down to one lane while crews worked the scene.
