Roads closed as crews battle outside fire in Pinehurst

A large outside fire in Pinehurst resulted in heavy smoke and road closures late Monday afternoon.

Emergency responders were dispatched shortly after 4 p.m. to the fire off Chicken Plant Road and worked for several hours to bring it under control.

Due to heavy smoke and the ongoing emergency response, Chicken Plant Road was closed between Linden Road and Bowman Road. The closure was implemented by the North Carolina Department of Transportation due to the potentially hazardous conditions.

Officials advised that local traffic traveling to the 500 block of Chicken Plant Road should access the area from Linden Road, while traffic traveling beyond the 500 block should enter from Bowman Road.

Heavy smoke was present in the surrounding areas.

The Pinehurst Fire Department, West End Fire Department, and Moore County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the response. There have been multiple large outdoor fires in the past week, including a forest fire that burned nearly 150 acres in Vass.

Authorities warned that smoke could become heavier in low-lying areas overnight as cooler air moves in. Drivers were urged to use caution in the area and seek alternate routes while crews continued working at the scene.
