The Town of Southern Pines, in partnership with NCDOT, will convert two additional blocks of Broad Street from two-way vehicle travel to one-way. The purpose of this change is to add more parking along Broad St. to serve downtown, according to the Town of Southern Pines’ website. The affected blocks are SW Broad St. and SE Broad St., between Massachusetts Ave. and Illinois Ave.Â
One-way travel leaving downtown will extend two more blocks on SW Broad St. toward W. Morganton Rd., transitioning to two-way at the intersection with W. Illinois Ave. Cars traveling from W. Morganton Rd. toward downtown will turn right at W. Illinois Avenue, cross the railroad tracks, and then turn left to continue toward downtown on SE Broad St. Following the project, these two blocks of SW Broad St. will be similar to other downtown blocks, with parallel parking on the right side and diagonal spaces on the left side.
SE Broad Street will also be converted into a one-way street for the two blocks between E. Illinois Avenue and E. Massachusetts Avenue. While additional parking may be added in the future, the only change being made at this time is to convert these two blocks from two-way to one-way, headed northbound toward downtown.
The work is expected to begin the week of Aug. 21 and be complete around the end of the month.Â
