A local amateur sports team won their championship Sunday.

Sandhills Machine, 2024, 6th grade division, competed at the Teammate Basketball National Championship on June 20 – 24 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.  The team won the championship in the NCAA Division by defeating TipOff TN, 61-56, said Coach Cash Sutton.

According to Sandhills Machine’s website, “Sandhills Machine is a youth national travel basketball program focusing on making our players accountable and responsible on and off the court.”

Sandhills Machine consists of five teams, class of 2021 through 2025 and is based out of Southern Pines.  In 2017, they were the 5th grade NTBA National Champions and were the USSSA NC State Champions for the 5th and 7th grade divisions.

The group is a non-profit for the youth in the community. 

Their mission is “to empower and develop advantaged/disadvantaged youth through competitive national travel basketball competition, mentorship, and mini sport camps. The social development of our youth using these tools will aid in empowering and instilling worth, while promoting a positive influence and healthy environment in our community.”
