Two local businesses that began serving their clients in the early years of the 1980s are now combined to serve the areas’ communities in the years ahead.
First Pioneer Insurance Agency and Matthews Insurance & Financial Services, both of Moore County, merged to continue as First Pioneer Insurance Agency, and maintain an affiliation with Erie Insurance, one of the top 25 property and casualty insurance companies in the nation.
The announcement came from the agency principals and managing co-owners, Wayne Matthews and Clayton Evans.
According to Matthews, “We are excited about the merger with First Pioneer Insurance Agency. The new agency represents a tremendous opportunity for all of our customers as it will enable us to provide a broader set of services.”
The ties the businesses share with the people of the Sandhills began in 1980 for First Pioneer and 1983 for Wayne Matthews.

Matthews began his insurance career in 1983 and founded Matthews Insurance in 2003. He specializes in financial, retirement, and wealth planning using life insurance and other strategies.
He is a member of the Financial Services Institute of America. He holds the professional designations of Accredited Adviser in Insurance (AAI), Associate in Information Technology (AIT), and Retirement Income Certified Professional (RICP®).
Evans began his insurance career in 1984 with First Pioneer and became co-owner in 1988. He has extensive experience in agricultural, workers compensation, and business insurance.
He served on the Moore County School Board, Home Builders Association, and various advisory boards. He holds the professional designations of Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) and Certified Builders Insurance Agent (CBIA).
