The architectural rending of SCCS new Arts & Athletic building was provided by SCCS officiate, Gene Liechty.

The SCCS Choir sang “Sing With Jubilation!” as the prelude to the opening ceremony.

The SCCS Choir, comprised of middle and upper school students, sings, “Sing With Jubilation” Oct. 29, 2021, at the Arts & Athletic building’s groundbreaking ceremony.

Director of Advancement, Gene Liechty, opened the ceremony with Scripture from Paul in Ephesians. He said without God everything is vapors and smoke, and nothing built without God will last.

Head of School, Dell Cook, said God created all matter, and as He created Earth and breathed life into man and formed woman from man, He is returning to the garden, moving forward to a garden city to grow disciples.

The daughter of founder Max Stanton, Cheryl Bachelder, told the story of how SCCS was formed.

“My parents were at a theology conference in Florida, and in front of them sat seven seventh-grade boys who took notes and never said a word,” Bachelder said. “During the break, he asked, ‘Where do you get boys like that?'”

Bachelder said her father was told about classical education, and he investigated this by visiting campuses and emerging himself in the courses and returned to Whispering Pines to begin a program here.

“Nine years ago it was just a dream. We were scrambling around for places to meet,” SCCS Board Member Tom Martin said.

Martin said in the beginning they rented a space they had to refurbish to use off Pennsylvania Avenue, and they just kept growing.

Reverend Dr. John Jacobs is the Senior Pastor at The Village Chapel in Pinehurst, and he gave the benediction. In closing, he challenged the students in the audience, “Do something that lasts longer than you.”

SCCS has 325 students, not including preschool.

SCCS is located at 1487 Rays Bridge Road in Whispering Pines.
