School district releases information on PowerSchool cyber incident

Moore County Schools announced that PowerSchool, the school district’s former student information system provider, recently reported a cyber incident that affected student and staff data across the state.

PowerSchool reported the cyber incident to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and shared that, with the assistance of CyberSteward, a cybersecurity firm, any breached data has been securely destroyed, according to a news release from Moore County Schools.

While the school district fully transitioned to Infinite Campus in August 2024, the state and PowerSchool stored legacy data from Moore County Schools dating back to 2013.

NCDPI has confirmed that Moore County Schools was included in the breached data. The school district is evaluating the full impact but has confirmed that no student social security numbers were breached.

According to the release, PowerSchool has confirmed that nothing Moore County Schools or NCDPI could have done to prevent this cybersecurity incident. By the end of January, they will contact affected families and employees directly.
