A man escaped a single-vehicle crash without any serious injuries in Cameron early Sunday morning. The crash happened in the 900 block of N.C. 24-27 near the Moore/Harnett County line around 6:30 a.m.
According to officials on scene, the Ford passenger car left the roadway on the opposite side, went airborne, struck a group of trees head-on, then overturned and came to a stop on its roof in the eastbound lane of N.C. 24-27. The car sustained extensive front-end damage, including both front wheels and suspension being ripped completely off the car.
The driver told officials he was traveling westbound on N.C. 24-27 toward U.S. 1 when he fell asleep. He woke up, smelled smoke, and tried to get out of the car.
That’s when two men who had been hunting in a wooded area near the scene and had heard the crash came out of the woods and found the man trying to break a window to escape the wreckage. They helped him out of the car and waited for emergency units to arrive.

Debris from the wreck scattered along the roadway.
Authorities on scene told Sandhills Sentinel that the man had sustained injuries to his head but refused treatment by EMS. He was alert and walking around the scene.
The eastbound lane of N.C. 24-27 was shut down while crews worked the scene and the vehicle was removed.
N.C. Highway Patrol was on scene investigating the crash.
Responding units were Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County EMS, and N.C. Highway Patrol.
