Yoga for Smiles raises funds for corrective surgery for children with cleft lip and palate

Southern Pines Yoga Co. will host the second annual Yoga for Smiles fundraiser, organized by instructor Gloria Moore, on Saturday, June 23 at 1:00 p.m. at the studio, located at 169 Beverly Lane.

Moore and instructors Laurel Dierking and Mark Hunsicker will offer three classes: Gentle Yoga at 1:00 p.m., Vinyasa Flow at 2:30 p.m. and Yoga Nidra/Restorative Yoga at 4:00 p.m.

A suggested donation of $10 per class is requested, and participants are asked to arrive 15 minutes before the beginning of each class they wish to attend. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the Yoga for Smiles event will go to Smile Train.

In 2017, Smile Train invited yoga teachers around the world to bring more smiles onto the faces of children burdened with cleft lip and palate by hosting Yoga for Smiles as fundraisers for Smile Train.

Gloria Moore has been teaching yoga for 11 years. During the last eight of those years, she has donated a portion of the proceeds to Smile Train. Invited to participate in the global challenge, she raised over $500.00 during the 2017 Yoga for Smiles and to date has raised over $7,700 for Smile Train.

The mission of Smile Train is focused on solving a single problem, cleft lip and palate. Cleft palate is a devastating affliction when not repaired. Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. Smile Train can perform repair surgery for as little as $250.00.

“I chose to raise money for Smile Train because the consequences of unrepaired cleft lip and palate are very severe, yet it is a problem that can be fixed,” said Moore. “In developing countries, cleft lip and palate are often viewed as being a curse. This causes families to feel shame, and rather than reach out for help, they keep the children hidden away, which only leads to more health problems such as hearing loss and malnourishment due to the challenge of eating with cleft palate. The children are unable to live fulfilling and healthy lives. Yoga for Smiles invites participants to be part of the solution while enjoying the practice of yoga.”
