Michael Leslie, an eighth grader at Elise Middle School in Robbins, has played basketball since he can remember. He fell in love with the game as most kids do at a very young age and, like many student-athletes, especially in smaller schools, became a two-sport athlete this year.
Michael helped his basketball team, the Northern Moore Colts, to their first winning season with a 6-4 record. The Northern Moore Colts are three schools that combine their athletes to make one team. The three schools are Highfalls Elementary, Westmoore Elementary, and Elise Middle.
He also led the team in scoring, averaging 11.3 points per game, and the team recognized him as their top defensive player. The highlight of Michael’s basketball season was when he led his team to victory over New Century.
“I scored 21, and it was a home game, so everyone was watching,” said Michael.
This year, he decided to try his speed at cross-country.
“It was my first year running, and it started with me wanting to stay in shape for basketball,” said Michael.
Little did he know he would stand out as one of the top runners for his team.
“Michael has emerged as a standout cross-country runner for the Colts this season, consistently demonstrating remarkable skills and determination,” said Ashley Priest, principal of Elise. “Michael proved to be a top-tier athlete.”
Michael consistently placed in the top 20 in every conference meet and had two top 10 finishes, placing fourth and eighth in two meets.
“It was very exciting; my mom was excited for me when she found out,” said Michael.
He plans to attend North Moore in the fall and wants to run cross-country and play basketball.
He is also an active member of the BETA club and on the Student Leadership Team.
“I like being a part of both of them; we get to help around the school and meet to discuss things about our school,” said Michael.
He loves playing basketball in his spare time on his PlayStation and outside.
“Michael excels both in competition and character,” said Priest. “He stands as an inspiring example of a well-rounded student-athlete, demonstrating that success comes from dedication, hard work, and a positive attitude.”
