The busy Friday evening commute just outside of Whispering Pines city limits was brought to a halt shortly after 5 p.m. when a T-bone collision occurred at the intersection of Mill Creek Road and Airport Road.
According to authorities on scene, a Hyundai Sonata pulled out from Mill Creek Road into the path of a Ford Ranger and was hit in the driver’s side.
The female driver of the Hyundai was initially pinned in the vehicle due to the nature of the impact, but firefighters with the Southern Pines Fire Department were able to cut the door and free her from the car quickly.
Air care was initially requested but could not fly due to weather conditions. She was transported to Moore Regional Hospital via ambulance instead. Her condition is unknown at this time.
The driver of the Ford truck was not injured in the collision.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, mainly on the front and drivers’ sides.
Airport Road was down to one lane, and Mill Creek Road was shut down while crews worked through heavy rain at times to clear the scene and get the vehicles removed.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol was on the scene investigating the crash.
Responding units were the Southern Pines Fire Department, Whispering Pines Fire Department as second rescue due to the pin-in, Moore County EMS, and N.C. Highway Patrol.
