This holiday season, Embers BBQ in Southern Pines is offering free take-home meals to anyone in need through its new “community specials.” What started as a small gesture from a local barbecue restaurant has turned into a community-wide effort to feed families in need.
Owner and chef David Bungarz said he began the effort to give back to the community that has supported his restaurant over the past three and a half years. The effort comes as many families across the area express concern about reduced SNAP benefits and rising food insecurity, though Bungarz plans on continuing support throughout the holiday season.
Bungarz said he started small, preparing about 10 meals a day, but quickly expanded as donations from customers poured in.
“It’s our way to give back at a time when it is needed most,” said Bungarz. “We were able to feed 50 families in one day. I definitely underestimated the power of people. The donations are amazing.”
Each bag includes a pound of pork or chicken, a side of mac and cheese or baked beans, coleslaw, and a six-ounce container of barbecue sauce.
Those wishing to pick up a free meal can stop by Embers BBQ at 130 SW Broad St. and ask for the “community special.” The offer is available while supplies last, with a limit of one per person or family to ensure more people can be served.
The restaurant has also added a “Donation for Community Special” button on its website, allowing customers to sponsor meals for others. Bungarz said every contribution goes directly toward food, containers, and supplies.
“This is at no cost to anyone who needs it,” he said. “We care deeply for the community that has supported us.”
