Three arrested in child custody dispute shooting case

Three people were arrested in an investigation where a child custody dispute ended in a shootout in Aberdeen on Victory Lane just before noon on Christmas Eve.

The Aberdeen Police Department announced on Tuesday the arrest of Jaquan Goins, 20, of Aberdeen, Garrett Chalmers, 26, of Aberdeen, and Maurice Purcell, 39, of Fayetteville.

“On December 24, 2024, Aberdeen Officers and Investigators, along with Moore County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, responded to the area of Midway Rd and Victory Ln, in reference to nearly a dozen reports of an active disturbance and numerous shots being fired,” said the Aberdeen Police Department in a news release. “Upon arrival, a large group of people had formed. Officers located a male subject, later determined to be a shooter, with gunshot wounds to his back and side. Officers located a second shooter on scene, along with shell casings from three separate firearms. It was determined that the third shooter had already left the scene, and only one firearm was recovered.”

The man who was shot was transported to Moore Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials investigated the scene and obtained statements from involved parties and witnesses.

“Over the next week, Aberdeen Investigators continued to analyze evidence, conduct follow ups, and obtain statements,” said the release.

On Jan. 3, warrants were obtained on Goins for felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and discharge a firearm in city limits, Chalmers for felony assault with a deadly weapon intent to kill and discharge a firearm in city limits, and Purcell for two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon intent to kill, felony possession of firearm by felon, and discharge a firearm in city limits.

Goins and Chalmers were arrested on Jan. 3 and taken before a Moore County magistrate and given $500,000 secured bonds. Purcell was arrested on Jan. 6 and taken before a Moore County magistrate and given no bond, pending a hearing before a judicial official.
