Two people were airlifted following a crash that shut down Highway 24/27 near Robbins. The incident happened on the Dry Creek bridge around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
A Toyota Camry traveling westbound crossed the centerline before hitting a guardrail on the eastbound shoulder. The Toyota bounced off the guardrail back into the eastbound lane, hitting a Kia head-on.
Both occupants of the Kia were airlifted by two helicopters to a trauma center with nonlife-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota was taken by ambulance to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, also with nonlife-threatening injuries.
A Toyota Camry is being pulled onto a tow truck after being in a head-on collision on Tuesday afternoon.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and says, at this time, there is no indication as to why the driver of the Toyota lost control of his car. As of this report, the male driver of the Toyota will be charged with crossing the centerline.
Troopers told Sandhills Sentinel that all first responders did an exceptional job getting to the patients and transporting them quickly to a landing zone for medical care. The highway was back open to traffic within an hour of the crash.
Robbins Fire and Rescue, Eagle Springs Fire and Rescue, Moore County EMS, UNC AirCare, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and Moore County Public Safety all responded to the incident.
