Two airlifted after head-on crash outside Carthage

A head-on collision just outside Carthage on Friday night sent two people to a trauma center. The crash happened on Highway 24-27 near the intersection with Kelly Plantation Road just before 8 p.m.

Emergency units were dispatched and arrived to find a Jeep SUV with heavy front-end damage in the middle of the road, and a Mitsubishi SUV with heavy damage slightly down an embankment in the wood line.

Highfalls Fire Department was dispatched for a second rescue to assist with removing the patients.

The position of the Mitsubishi made the process of removing the driver difficult and took an extended amount of time.

The male driver of the Jeep and the female driver of the Mitsubishi were the only occupants and were airlifted to a UNC trauma center in separate helicopters from a landing zone at Gilliam-McConnell Airfield. Their condition is unknown at this time.

Highway 24-27 was shut down for an extended period of time, and traffic was diverted onto Kelly Plantation Road and Myrick Road while crews worked the scene and the roadway could be cleared.

Highway Patrol was on the scene and is investigating the accident.

Responding to the scene were Carthage Fire Department, Highfalls Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Moore County Public Safety, Carthage Police Department and N.C. State Highway Patrol.
