Moore County Animal Services is currently at full capacity due to a recent rise in animal intakes and a slowdown in adoptions – trends being felt by shelters and rescues across the region.
“This is not unique to Moore County, but we are taking proactive steps to ensure the continued wellbeing of the animals already in our care,” said Animal Services on its Facebook page on Wednesday. “As part of that effort, we are temporarily pausing new intakes through the end of this week.”
To support this effort, all adoption fees are currently waived. If you’ve been considering adding a pet to your family, this is a perfect time. Each adoption helps open space for another animal in need and supports the broader goal of reducing shelter crowding.
“If you find a stray animal in Moore County and are able to safely care for it, we ask that you contact our office to be added to the Stray Intake List,” said Animal Services. “While we work to create space, we will do our best to guide you through steps to help reunite the animal with its owner.”
If you find a stray animal, please email details and a picture to the local media at [email protected]. It will be shared with the public. You can also post to one or more local Facebook pages dedicated to lost pets, including Lost & Found Pets Moore County North Carolina, Lost & Found Dogs of Moore County, NC, and Lost & Found Petfinder Network of Moore County. These pages reach thousands of residents and are often effective in returning pets home.
If the animal can be safely transported, most veterinary offices offer free microchip scanning. There are also self-service scanning stations available at Burney’s Hardware in Aberdeen, Moore Equine in Southern Pines, and Carthage Farm Supply in Carthage. You may also bring the animal to Animal Services to be scanned, or call to request assistance from Animal Control officers.
If you’re unable to keep the animal, please first check with nearby homes to ensure it doesn’t belong to someone in the immediate area. You may also contact local rescue organizations in the Moore County Community Resource Guide. If you need to surrender your own pet, please call Animal Services to be placed on a waiting list.
“We remain committed to serving the animals and residents of Moore County, and we are grateful for your support,” said Animal Services. “With the community’s help, we can move more pets into safe homes and resume normal shelter operations as soon as possible.”
