The emergency service community is reeling after the death of one of their own.

Moore County EMS Major Tommy McNeill died Saturday during training. McNeill was teaching a Wilderness Search and Rescue course when he experienced a severe medical condition.

On the NC Search and Rescue Facebook page, Todd Brown posted, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we pass along word that we have lost one of our greatest leaders in Rescue and EMS. Tommy was a great friend to NCEM and the entire rescue and EMS community across the state. He was a former commander of the NC Association of Rescue and EMS and a chief at Ash-Rand Rescue and EMS where he served for a time as Task Force Leader for NC USAR Task Force 7.

“Our condolences to his family and friends of which there are a precious plenty. Tommy lived his life in devotion to helping others, he gave his heart to rescue and his family, but his soul belonged to God. Rest In Peace Chief and thanks for everything, we’ll take it from here.”
