Two Carthage landmarks are now gone.
The town’s two water towers were no longer in use and were too costly to refurbish. Many residents had hoped the one near the traffic circle could be saved as it is a reminder of times past and featured the iconic buggy logo.
The town said it would cost between $160,000 – $350,000 to refurbish the structure. “That’s a tremendous amount of money to maintain a landmark,” Commissioner George Wilson said.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture agreed to pay for the demolition, according to Town Manager, Tom Robinson.
