Chickens survive Vass coop fire

Firefighters responded to a chicken coop fire Tuesday afternoon after a Crain’s Creek Fire Department chief spotted heavy black smoke while returning from a medical call.

According to the department, the fire occurred around 5:25 p.m. at a residence off McPherson Road in the Vass area. While traveling back to the station, Chief Mackey noticed the smoke. The property owner was contacted, and said he was nearby in a cornfield and heading home.

Moments later, the homeowner confirmed that his chicken coop and the surrounding area were on fire.

Fire crews were dispatched and arrived to find the coop fully engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading across the ground and into nearby woods, moving toward the residence.

Firefighters quickly worked to knock down the flames and stop the fire from reaching the home. Crews also focused on containing the woods fire to prevent further spread.

Eventually, the fire was successfully brought under control.

No injuries were reported, and officials said they believe all of the chickens survived the fire.

The Crain’s Creek Fire Department was assisted by mutual aid partners from Spout Springs Emergency Services, Fort Bragg, and Cypress Pointe.

The cause of the fire was not stated in the initial report, but a comment from the Crain’s Creek Fire Department indicated an electric fence may have been involved.
