Home threatened in fire started by heat lamp

An early-morning fire threatened an occupied home Friday along McIntosh Road between Vass and Carthage, according to Cypress Pointe Department Chief Mike Cameron.

Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue and the North Carolina Forest Service were initially dispatched just after 4 a.m. to a reported outside fire. While units were en route, dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting the same incident and upgraded the response to a structure fire.

When Engine 211 arrived, crews reported an outside fire involving two small outbuildings, a pickup truck, and a lawn mower, with flames impinging on a nearby home.

Firefighters immediately deployed an attack line, working between the engine and the house to knock down the fire and protect the occupied structure. Deputies with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office evacuated the residents as a precaution. Once the home was secured, crews shifted suppression efforts to the outbuildings and vehicle.

Additional units, including Engine 512 from Whispering Pines Fire and Rescue and crews from Southern Pines Fire Rescue, assisted with fire control. Brush 217 was assigned to contain a woods fire, while tankers supplied water to the attack engines.

The North Carolina Forest Service and Moore County Public Safety investigated the incident and determined the fire was caused by a heat lamp near one of the outbuildings that had been used to keep a dog warm. The dog was not injured.

No injuries were reported.
