A driver fleeing a traffic stop slammed into multiple vehicles in a crash on U.S. 1 and Saunders Blvd. in Southern Pines Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
A sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop at U.S. 1 and Magnolia in Aberdeen, and the driver fled at a high rate of speed, crashing just over a mile away, according to authorities on scene.

The passenger of the fleeing Chevrolet Impala was pinned in the wreckage, and firefighters had to use hydraulic tools to cut the woman from the car. Once extricated, she was flown to a trauma center. The driver of the fleeing vehicle was also injured and transported to the hospital by ambulance.
An Acura SUV with a mother and her 1-year-old was struck by the fleeing vehicle, and both were injured and taken by ambulance to the hospital, according to officials. The driver of a pickup who declined treatment was not transported to the hospital.
