Sanford woman charged with fleeing, drug offenses after major U.S. 1 wreck

A Sanford woman has been arrested following a crash on U.S. 1 in Southern Pines that injured multiple people, including a 1-year-old child, on Saturday afternoon.

According to records at the Moore County Detention Center, 32-year-old Kendra Snipes was booked into the jail Saturday afternoon following the wreck.

Snipes faces charges including felony fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, possession of fentanyl, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving with wanton disregard, driving while license revoked, fictitious or false information to an officer, and a window tint violation.

She is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in Moore County District Court on June 3.

The crash itself occurred around 11 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 1 near Saunders Boulevard.

Authorities said a deputy with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop near U.S. 1 and Magnolia Road in Aberdeen before the driver fled at a high rate of speed. The fleeing vehicle, a Chevrolet Impala, crashed into multiple vehicles roughly a mile away in Southern Pines.

The crash injured several people. Officials said a passenger in the Impala became trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by firefighters using hydraulic rescue tools before being airlifted to a trauma center. Three other people, including the driver of the Impala and a mother and her 1-year-old child traveling in an Acura SUV, were transported by ambulance to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
