Pinehurst announces healthy aging partnership

In recognition of National Senior Citizens Day, the Village of Pinehurst is partnering with Given Memorial Library and Given Tufts Bookshop on a new initiative connecting residents with resources that support healthy aging and lifelong learning.

Earlier this summer, the Pinehurst Village Council adopted a resolution recognizing National Senior Citizens Day and affirming the Village’s appreciation for the contributions older adults make to the Pinehurst community. The new Healthy Aging initiative builds on that recognition by providing residents with practical resources designed to support well-being, continued learning and engagement at every stage of life.

Through the partnership, Given Memorial Library will feature a curated collection of books recommended by members of the Senior Advisory Committee. Topics include brain health, physical wellness, nutrition, healthy longevity, caregiving, resilience and purposeful aging.

The collection will initially feature 12 titles selected by committee members based on books they have found informative and valuable. The featured collection complements the library’s existing resources on aging and wellness, including materials related to psychology, medicine, physical and mental wellness, sociology and biographies.

Library patrons can also borrow MEternally Reminiscence Kits, which provide activities and opportunities for meaningful engagement for individuals experiencing memory loss and their caregivers. Library staff is available to help residents identify books, kits and other resources that meet their individual interests and needs.

Given Tufts Bookshop will support the initiative by highlighting donated books related to healthy aging as they become available. Because the nonprofit bookshop’s inventory is entirely donation-based, available titles will change regularly, providing another opportunity for residents to discover resources while giving donated books a new life in the community.

“This partnership reflects our belief that aging well begins with knowledge, curiosity and community,” said Dr. Bill Grover, chair of the Senior Advisory Committee’s Healthy Aging Working Group, in a Village press release. “By making these resources easier to find, we hope to encourage residents to continue learning, asking questions and taking an active role in their well-being.”

Mayor Patrick Pizzella said the collaboration reflects the Village’s commitment to supporting residents throughout every stage of life.

“Earlier this summer, the Village Council formally recognized National Senior Citizens Day and the tremendous contributions older adults make to Pinehurst,” Pizzella said. “This partnership puts that recognition into action. By bringing together the expertise of our library, the generosity of the Given Tufts Bookshop and the work of the Senior Advisory Committee, we’re making high-quality resources more visible and accessible to our community.”

Audrey Moriarty, director of Given Memorial Library, said the partnership provides another way for the library to connect residents with information that can make a meaningful difference in their lives.

“The Given Memorial Library is pleased to partner with the Senior Advisory Committee on this initiative,” Moriarty said. “This collaboration highlights trusted resources on healthy aging and makes it easier for residents to discover books, reminiscence kits and other materials that support lifelong learning and well-being.”

Amy Metz, manager of Given Tufts Bookshop, said the partnership also aligns with the bookshop’s mission of extending the value of donated books.

“At the Given Tufts Bookshop, every donated book has the opportunity to continue its story,” Metz said. “We’re proud to support this healthy aging initiative by connecting readers with quality pre-owned books that encourage lifelong learning, wellness and a stronger community.”

The initiative supports the Senior Advisory Committee’s broader work to help make Pinehurst an increasingly age-friendly community by promoting healthy aging, lifelong learning, social connection and informed decision-making.

Residents are encouraged to visit Given Memorial Library (150 Cherokee Road) to explore the featured Healthy Aging collection and other available resources. Residents can also visit Given Tufts Bookshop (95 Cherokee Road) to browse donated titles related to healthy aging and wellness as they become available.
