Collision near Vass sends one to hospital

The evening commute on U.S. Highway 1, between Vass and Southern Pines, was halted Wednesday after a collision.

The two-vehicle crash happened just after 5 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 1 and Youngs Road.

According to authorities on scene, a flatbed tractor-trailer coming from Youngs Road attempted to cross Highway 1 and turn left when it pulled into the path of a Pontiac minivan traveling northbound.

The minivan struck the truck in the driver’s side, causing the truck’s fuel tank to rupture. The minivan came to a stop in the median with significant front-end damage.

The male driver of the van was transported to Moore Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The male driver of the truck was uninjured.

One lane northbound and one lane southbound of U.S. Highway 1 was shut down for an extended period while crews worked the scene, and the vehicles were removed.

North Carolina Department of Transportation was dispatched to the scene with a load of sand for the diesel spill.

N.C. State Highway Patrol was on the scene investigating the crash.

Responding to the scene were Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Southern Pines Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Vass Police Department, N.C. Highway Patrol and NC DOT.

Rockwell Towing removed the flatbed tractor-trailer from the scene.
