A father was arrested in connection to the death of his young child in 2023.
On Dec. 2, 2023, Moore County Sheriff’s Deputies, alongside emergency medical personnel, responded to a distress call reporting an unresponsive child in the 100 block of Shady Wood Court in West End. The child, identified as 2-year-old River Carter, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Investigators determined that River had been isolated in a room for more than twelve hours and had been exposed to elevated temperatures from a space heater prior to his death being reported,” said the Moore County Sheriff’s Department in a news release. “After thoroughly reviewing the medical examiner’s findings, authorities arrested the child’s father, 27-year-old Aaron Lynwood Carter of Fayetteville, NC, on January 7, 2025.”
Carter has been charged with one count of felony involuntary manslaughter and one count of felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury in connection with River’s death.
He has been committed to the Moore County Detention Center under a $500,000 secured bond, with his first court appearance scheduled in Moore County district court on Jan. 9.
