Firefighters rescued two cats from a house fire in Southern Pines on Thursday.
The fire started just after 3:30 p.m. in the 400 block of S. May Street. According to radio traffic, one resident was home and called 911. He was able to vacate the house without being harmed.
The fire was mainly in the attic area, and firefighters were seen venting the home’s gables. A fence on the property had to be cut with a chain saw for firefighters to make easy entry to the back of the house.
The home suffered heavy fire, smoke, and water damage.
Crews from Southern Pines Fire and Rescue, Aberdeen Fire and Rescue, Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue, and Fort Liberty Fire Department battled the blaze and got it extinguished in about an hour. No one was injured during fire operations.
A section of S. May Street was closed for some time. Southern Pines Police Department assisted with traffic control. Moore County EMS was on the scene out of precaution.
The fire is being investigated by the Southern Pines Fire Marshal and Moore County Fire Marshal’s Office.
