Five unoccupied tractor-trailers burned early Sunday in a remote area off Highway 690 in Vass, according to Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue.
“Just after 1:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue was dispatched to an outside fire off Highway 690,” reports the department. “Upon the arrival of the first fire engine, they reported a grass fire with multiple trailers involved. A secondary size-up confirmed that five tractor-trailers—without tractors attached—were on fire.”
The department says that due to the remote location of the incident, three tanker trucks were utilized to supply water to the attack engine as crews worked to contain the fire, which had spread from one trailer to the other five. Several additional trailers nearby were threatened by the fire.

Because of limited water access at the location, three tanker trucks were used to supply water as crews worked to stop the spread. Firefighters later requested additional personnel from the Southern Pines Fire Department, which sent an engine company to assist.
One of the trailers was loaded with more than 1,800 bales of pine straw, contributing to heavy fire conditions and prolonging suppression efforts, Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue said. Crews remained on scene for more than five hours and continued to monitor the area throughout the day as materials smoldered.
Additional units included Crains Creek Fire Department, Southern Pines Fire Department, the North Carolina Forest Service, Moore County EMS, and the Moore County Sheriff’s Department.
