Head-on collision sends one to hospital

The second head-on collision reported by Sandhills Sentinel in less than a week led to the partial closure of U.S. Highway 15-501 again in Carthage on Thursday night.

The two-vehicle wreck happened at the intersection of Joel Road around 7:30 p.m., less than two miles from the location of a fatal head-on collision that occurred Tuesday night.

According to officials, a Chevrolet Colorado was traveling south on Highway 15-501 in the turning lane to make a left turn onto Joel Road when a Jeep made a right turn off Joel Road into the same turning lane right into the path of the Chevrolet truck.

Shortly after emergency units arrived on the scene, they requested a second rescue due to the driver being pinned in the vehicle.

After a brief period, they were able to extricate the male driver, and the second rescue was canceled. Air Care was en route but was canceled, and the man was transported to Moore Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

The male driver of the Jeep was not injured.

Highway 15-501 was shut down for over an hour while crews worked the scene, and the road was cleared.

Traffic was diverted down Legion Hut Road during that time.

Carthage Fire Department, Carthage Police Department, Moore County EMS and Moore County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
