Crews from the Southern Pines Fire Department had just returned to their station after responding to a car crash 15 minutes earlier when they were paged to the same location for a second wreck on Thursday morning.
Both single-vehicle wrecks occurred at the bridge at U.S. 1 and Valley View Road when the drivers lost control and went off the road and down a steep embankment. Fire crews used Westover Road to access both wrecks. Westover Road is a small road that runs parallel to the highway.
According to officials, the first wreck was just before 7:30 a.m. when a southbound driver lost control on the icy bridge and slid off the road and down an embankment, rolling the car before coming to rest on its side on Westover Road. Authorities said the driver was not seriously injured.

In the second crash, the driver lost control on the same icy bridge and slid off the highway. As it went down the embankment, it slammed into trees, causing heavy damage to the car. Firefighters were able to free the driver from the wreckage, and EMS transported the driver to FirstHealth Moore Regional with non-life-threatening injuries.
