A lightning strike was likely the cause of a house fire in Southern Pines over the weekend.
Reports of smoke showing from a residence on Sheldon Road came into 911 on Sunday afternoon. The call came in during heavy thunderstorms that blanketed the area just before 2 p.m.
Heavy smoke was showing from the roof. The two-story structure suffered significant damage to the top floor. Southern Pines Fire Chief Mike Cameron said the fire appears to have started in the attic.
No one was at home when the blaze broke out.
The fire marshal was on scene and will investigate the cause, but it is suspected to be a lightning strike.
Units from Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, Cypress Pointe, Fort Bragg, and Moore County EMS responded to the scene.
