The smart thinking of a homeowner and quick response from local fire departments saved a house from significant damage after a lightning strike on Saturday evening. First responders were alerted to the house fire on Pecan Lane in Aberdeen around 6 p.m. in the midst of the huge storm that rolled through Moore County.
The homeowner reported that he heard a loud boom and instinctively thought that lighting had struck his home. The boom was immediately followed by a smell of smoke, prompting him to quickly call 911.
Fire crews arrived on the scene in minutes and reported a slight haze of smoke along the edge of the roof. They located a fire in the attic and easily extinguished it.
Lighting damage could be seen to a tree in the backyard of the residence.
Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Pinebluff Fire & Rescue, Pinehurst Fire Department, Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, and the Aberdeen Police Department responded to the fire.
